• Heritage on Rails: Hanoi’s Most Immersive Travel Experience

Vietnam is redefining the way visitors experience its heritage with the launch of the “Five Gates” Heritage Train, a one-of-a-kind cultural journey connecting Hanoi with the historic Kinh Bac region.

More than just transportation, this immersive rail experience functions as a “living museum on wheels”, where culture, history, and contemporary creativity unfold throughout the journey. Designed around the concept of slow travel, the train invites passengers to move beyond sightseeing and instead fully absorb Vietnam’s heritage at a relaxed, meaningful pace.

Hanoi Train - Heritage Journey

Often described as “a miniature Hanoi on rails,” the Hanoi Train captures the spirit of the capital through carefully curated design. Inspired by the historic beauty of ancient Thang Long Citadel, the train carriages are named after the city’s five iconic gates: O Cau Den, O Quan Chuong, O Cau Giay, O Cho Dua, and O Dong Mac, names that evoke the thousand-year-old cultural legacy of the imperial capital and the rich heritage of the Red River Delta. Each carriage reflects a different layer of Hanoi’s identity: from the iconic imagery of Long Bien Bridge woven into ceilings and interiors, to flowing patterns inspired by the Red River, alongside elements of French colonial architecture, traditional Dong Ho folk paintings, and nostalgic references to communal living spaces of the past. Together, these details create a rich visual narrative that transports travellers across time, from historic memory to modern life.

Every carriage tells a distinct story. Some evoke the elegance of old Hanoi with refined East-meets-West aesthetics, while others recreate the simplicity of the subsidy-era years, offering an intimate glimpse into everyday life in decades past. A highlight is the open “check-in” carriage, inspired by Long Bien Bridge, where travelers can enjoy panoramic views, fresh air, and uninterrupted moments of connection with the landscape.

The train also introduces several “firsts” in Vietnam’s tourism sector. As the country’s first double-decker tourist train, it offers expanded space and elevated viewpoints. A fully open carriage enhances the sensory experience, allowing guests to engage directly with the surroundings. Evening departures transform the journey into a romantic exploration of Hanoi by night, where city lights and quiet streets create a uniquely atmospheric backdrop.

Onboard, the experience extends beyond visuals. Seasonal Hanoi cuisine is thoughtfully presented, featuring iconic dishes such as pho (noodle soup), grilled fish, sticky rice with young green rice flakes, and traditional delicacies, each crafted to evoke a sense of place and memory. Live mini-performances blend traditional music with contemporary arrangements, creating unexpected emotional moments throughout the journey.

To ensure accessibility for global visitors, the train is equipped with multilingual narration, offering deeper cultural insights and enabling meaningful cross-cultural connection.

With a capacity of 240 passengers across multiple themed carriages, including dedicated open-view spaces, the Hanoi Train is not merely a means of travel, it is a multi-sensory cultural experience. Here, guests don’t just move between destinations; they see, hear, taste, and feel Vietnam’s heritage in motion.
